'Ah, the tenses!'
When we think about grammar, tense is often the first thing that comes to mind. But what exactly do tenses do?
We use them to locate events in time, order those events, and distinguish background information from foreground action. In other words, we use tenses to tell stories. We even call them narrative tenses.
