Giraffe One, Humans Nil

A family is feeding the giraffes at the zoo. The young boy holds out a large green leaf but holds onto the thick stalk for a little too long. The result is that the giraffe lifts him right off the ground. His parents grab a leg each in what briefly becomes a game of tug of war. The moment was captured on video and shared widely on Instagram and TikTok.

In this lesson, students listen to the story before seeing the video. Then they analyse how present continuous and present simple work together in narratives, before creating their own stories based on three other videos involving human-giraffe interactions (all provided in the lesson plan).

It is a memorable story that gives students authentic grammar practice and will almost certainly result in a deeper love for these incredible creatures.
